The effects of human trampling on the population parameters of the soldier crab Dotilla fenestrata at Praia da Costa do Sol, Maputo were studied in two areas subjected to two different levels of human disturbance: (1) a low disturbance area; and (2) a high disturbance area. Sampling was carried out 1 day before and 1 day after disturbance took place and crab abundance and biomass data were compared between the two periods at each area. No significant differences (P > 0.05) were found between abundance and biomass values before and after the disturbance. These results suggest that human trampling has an insignificant effect on D. fenestrata and that behavioral and habitat structure aspects might play more important roles on the population ecology of the... |

Coral and rocky reefs are very important ecosystems in terms of their diversity, productivity, abundance and beauty. Mozambique possesses extensive reef areas, where fish fauna is the main exploited resource. Nevertheless, the ecology of these resources is little studied. A recent report listed 794 reef-associated fishes known to occur in Mozambican coral and rocky reefs. This is a first accountancy of the high fish diversity of Mozambican reefs, which must be assessed. Reef-associated fish resources exploitation is conducted at three basic levels: (i) subsistence (artisanal fishery); (ii) commercial exploitation (semi-industrial reef fishery, ornamental fish trade and recreational diving); and (iii) sports fishing. Presently, the artisanal fishery is the... |

The extensive coral reefs along the coastline of Mozambique are a valuable national resource. They provide food and income for a large proportion of the country’s coastal communities and have a great potential for generating substantial economic growth within the tourism sector. The government of Mozambique has recognised the importance of coral reefs and has initiated a number of actions aimed at the sustainable management and conservation of this resource under its National Coral Reef Management Programme (NCRMP). The current two year moratorium on the trade in ornamental fish and live corals is one such initiative and it was important that the opportunity to formulate a framework for the sustainable management of this trade be acted upon quickly. It is... |

Mozambique initiated a Coral Reef Management Programme (MCRMP) in 1998, with the core aim to ensure the long-term sustainable utilization of the coral reef resources of Mozambique. Within the programmed activities, the monitoring of coral reefs is one of the most important. Thus, a long-term monitoring programme was launched in 1999 with most of the monitoring stations being visited in November 1999. Several reefs along the coast were surveyed, using standardized methodology. The preliminary results of this study showed already that protected or inaccessible reefs were in better conditions than those freely exploited, and highlighted the need for management measures and establishment of marine protected areas. The present paper reviews the preliminary... |

The southern part of Mozambique suffered, at the beginning of the present year, the worst floods in the last 50 years, which caused several fatalities and high material losses. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of this phenomenon on the coral communities of the Xai-Xai lagoon reef. Benthic category percentage cover was assessed in January 2000 (before the floods) and September 2000 (after the floods) using the line intercept transect (LIT). A decrease of hard coral percentage cover was observed, in the order of 58.5 %. The soft coral community was also affected, with a high decrease of percentage cover, about 90.4%. Other benthic category that showed an elevated decrease was coralline algae (85.1%). All other categories increased... |

The use of gastropod shells by the hermit crab Clibanarius longitarsus at Costa do Sol Mangrove was investigated. Particular attention was paid to the influence of human collection of intertidal gastropod resources on the availability and utilization of shells by C. longitarsus. Three main methods were used in this study: crab field collections, shell selection laboratory experiments and interviews with local women who collect intertidal mollusk resources. A total of 23 shell types were used by C. longitarsus at the Costa do Sol mangrove, the most common being Volema pyrum, Murex brevispina and Terebralia palustris. Gastropod shells were a limiting resource for hermit crabs. Although shell availability could not be explained by human exploitation, which... |

The first studies undertaken in Mozambique regarding reef fishes were carried out at Inhaca Island in the final 30’s (Lopes 1937; 1938). In the 50’s and 60’s, mainly taxonomic studies were conducted and reef fish species lists were made available especially for Inhaca Island (e.g. Smith 1958; Sanches 1963; Smith 1968). Only recently, investigations of other aspects of the reef fish fauna has begun. Kalk (1995) elaborated on the trophic composition of the reef fish fauna at Inhaca Island and Loureiro (1998) studied the artisanal reef fisheries in Mécufi District, north of Mozambique. Under the Darwin/Frontier Mozambique project (Whittington et al. 1998) the diversity, species composition, abundance and fisheries of the coral reef fish fauna of the Quirimbas... |
